Don’t forget your camera!!!! It’s not usually the first thing I say when I’m talking about restaurants, but you really will be mad if you leave your camera at the wrong end of the gondola ride. Sky Bistro is perched at the top of Sulphur Mountain and to say the views are magnificent is an understatement. If you can pull your gaze away from the view for long enough to peruse the menu, you’ll find fabulous dishes like venison (roespeck-wrapped loin served with winter veggies, apple & pear purée, with cherry & black sage ‘pipe’-fortified glaze…) or a sage & thyme polenta with BC-foraged mushrooms, balsamic sherry-roasted heirloom tomato, sweet potato purée, and cashew crème fraîche.

Order á là carte or purchase a dinner package that includes your gondola ticket. Check the website to see if there’s a special event series like the Winemakers’ Dinner Series that pairs tastings from BC wineries with stunning views and superb dining. Must stop. Have run out of superlatives.

Wondering what happened to me aprés my big day in the mountains? That’s probably me blissed out in a comfy chair by the fire in the Terrace lounge with a Smokeback Mountain Margarita in hand. Need a snack recommendation? Try the Cicchetti Slate, a platter of traditional Italian appies like pear with gorgonzola & walnut, pickled artichoke hearts, smoked trout with gherkins and more…. Or, if you’re in the mood for something more substantial, the chicken parmesan sliders served up with salad, soup, or fries are a great option. The Heritage Farms chicken breast is hand-breaded and served with Prosciutto cotto, provolone cheese & Nonna’s tomato Basil sauce. Grazie, Nonna!

Finish the evening with a specialty coffee like the all-Canadian Hat Trick featuring Wayne Gretzky #99 Red Cask Whisky, Sortilege Maple Whisky & Wayne Gretzky #99 Canadian Cream, topped with liqueur-infused hand shaken cream. Go, Gretzky, Go!!

Where’s the party? At the Beaver Bar in the Samesun Banff Hostel, of course! And, oh - what a party! Fuelled by AGWA Bombs (made with a feisty cocoa-leaf liqueur from Bolivia) you’ll soon be shouting out your trivia answers or serenading the room on karaoke nights! Beer pong? Hell, yeah! Hungry? Chow down on pub tasties like waffle fry poutine or a Beaver Burger (or hearty veggie options if you aren’t into burgers.) Dinner specials every night - and the always-fun Beaver Shot Wheel to mix things up at the bar. (No idea what I’m talking about? Come on in and take a spin yourself).

Cheap drinks, super-friendly staff, special events every night - the Beaver Bar is Banff’s best place to hang out after dark with a bunch of friends - those you arrived with and the new ones you’ll make.

In the mood for good (real) Chinese food? You can’t do better than Bamboo Garden. Great service, marvelous views, and treats like Szechuan Prawns prepared the traditional way. You’ll find plenty of vegetables cooked to perfection and a good range of familiar dishes (beef with broccoli, pork or chicken selections, rice and noodle dishes), but also other Asian specialties like Korean BBQ Beef Ribs or Thai Cashew Nuts Chicken. I’ve got a few items on my ‘next-time’ list including the Soft Tofu Red Curry and, for a special treat, the Coconut Surprise Gelato and Mango Sorbetto. My plan? Round up a gaggle of hungry friends so we can eat family-style (and I can taste more dishes!)

Prefer to wind down in your hotel? (or, lucky Banff residents, at home….), take advantage of Bamboo Garden’s take-out menu and then settle in for a snuggle with your sweetie, Chinese food, and Netflix.

Looking for the ultimate combination of mountain flair and exquisite food? You’ll find it in the Vistas Dining Room perched high above the valley (top floor of the Sally Borden Building at the Banff Centre For Arts and Creativity. ) I’m honestly not sure what’s more gasp-worthy - the food or the views!  Confession: I love a good buffet. There’s something about having not having to choose one dish or another that’s so low stress - just have a little of everything! Being able to sample as many different flavours and dishes as possible makes this mountain girl pretty damned happy!

The menus change daily, but no matter whether you choose the breakfast, lunch, or dinner options you’ll walk away patting your tummy and with a big grin on your face (or, was that just me?) I love the fact there are lots of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options in the mix. No need for any of my friends to miss out on a fabulous meal here!
